Cornwall Fire and Rescue Half Marathon Report

23 February 2016
Written by: JAN SROCZYNSKI

Ten Harriers made the short trip to Bodmin to compete in the 5th running of the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Half Marathon. This year the course was altered from the previous events and was a tougher challenge with more hills and some tough trails to conquer. The event raises substantial amounts for charities and is well supported. This year 351 runners completed this somewhat muddy course. As well as ordinary runners fans of the growing sport of Cani Cross also ran in this race where owners run in tandem with their dogs. East Cornwall Harriers have several cani cross runners within the club.

First home for East Cornwall Harriers and in 4th place overall was the ever improving Marc Smerdon in a very fast time of 1h 23m.29s. Second harrier home was Ian Littlewood in 30th place, but first Cani Cross runner with his dog Thelma in 1h 38m 40 sec, a brilliant performance for both. Third home for the Harriers and first lady was Rosalie Goldsmith in 1h 49.20 a great run. 4th Harrier was Ben Harding in 1.52.12 another excellent run from Ben. Amy Williams was 5th Harrier in 1h 54. 15 just ahead of Ann Quarmby in 1h 54.47. Sharon Daw was hot on her heels in 1h 57.26 and enjoying the testing course.  Louise Littlewoood and her canine partner Ava ,finished in 2h. 00.19s, 2nd Cani Cross finisher and 8th Harrier..Another very solid run was engineered by Jim Lockyer to finish in 2h.00.40secs and Jen Hicks completed the Harriers line up in 2h 20.59 and also credit to her for the photo.

Over in Saltram Park 6 Harriers took part in the 10k Snowflake run part of the series that raises funds for cancer charities. Craig Vaughnley was first back in 53m 43 secs a new PB for him in his pursuit of a sub 50minute 10k obviously now on the horizon for him. In addition Barry Stanford, Zoe Maycox Anita Taylor and Regina Farrell also completed the run.
