ECH Race Report 18 March 2019.

A weekend of 3 Half Marathons on St Patricks Day.

Round 4 of the Cornwall Road Running Grand Prix hosted by Falmouth Road Runners – the Falmouth Half Marathon.

For those familiar with Falmouth the hills are quite challenging. Starting near the Falmouth Hotel and up hill around the Castle before dropping back to the seafront for the leg around the Swanpool the race then takes runners higher up the hill around Falmouth on a 7 mile loop prior to returning to the finish fortunately with a downhill gradient. 9 Harriers made the trip on a wintery Sunday morning.

1st Harrier home was Simon Webber in 1.40.03 and 2nd in his MV60 age group. Joe Kearns with another solid run was 2nd Harrier in 1.41.37. Laurie Thrift in his 65 -69 Age category had a very fine run finishing in 1.44.45. Kaye Patterson was close on his heels finishing as 1st lady Harrier in 1.45.24. Glenn Wood 1.59.34 was next home with Lucy Oldham 2.05.02 - 2nd lady Harrier. Ian Gundry posted 2.12.29. Sarah Steed 2.22.10 just pipped Jeanette Turpin 2.22.28. Good performances on this tough course.

On most runners “ to do list “ is Bath Half marathon and this year 5 Harriers made the journey for this huge sell out race. Carol Pollard made a very welcome return to racing – raising funds for Cancer Research and finished in 2.15.18.

For the 4 male Harriers, Darren Harvey was 1st home in an excellent 1.26.19 followed by Ben Harding in 1.30.48. Marcus Wills 1.36.34 was 3rd just ahead of Martin Nicholls – 1.40.34.

Another “to do” Half Marathon is Reading – known for its very supportive crowds and unique finish in Reading United football stadium. For the Harriers and Smerdon contingent a lovely family day out. Marc Smerdon was 1st back in a very quick 1.19.09. Paul Kelsey was next in 1.59.35 followed by Lindsey Smerdon with a new PB of 2.05.17. Lesley Taphouse – Lindsey's Mum, running for her local club Bodmin Road Runners also posted a PB of 2.30.35.
